Philip Jonathan [sets] an astonishingly high standard thanks to a blend of looped acoustic guitar, gentle violin and the loveliest of soulful folk melancholy you’re likely to hear this side of Ryan Adams’ Love Is Hell.” - NARC, reviewing a live performance at The Engine Room, Sept 2021.

Philip Jonathan’s songs are carefully crafted from deep, personal meditations on the most raw and vulnerable moments of life; a reflection on the questions that rise to the surface, and a relentless hunt for the beauty that can be found within.

His debut single ’Seafront’ (May ‘21) and follow-up single ‘I, Hope’ (July ‘21) were released with glowing reviews from Obscure Sound, Neonmusic Now, Ear to the Ground and NARC magazine amongst others. Both were featured on BBC Introducing North East, Indie Folk Central and other local radio. ‘Seafront’ received No. 1 in the UKCC June Indie/folk/acoustic charts and ‘I, Hope’ was Track of the Week on Folklore Radio.

Classically trained in piano and violin, performances involve a multi-instrumental performance brought together through sensitive use of a loop pedal. Upbeat tracks such as ‘White Lines’ and ‘Giant’ are balanced with mesmerising moments created in ‘Before the Dawn’ and ‘Black Crow’.

Reviews for Philip Jonathan

Philip Jonathan has released his highly-accomplished debut Seafront...a fearless introduction to an up and coming British artist.” Neon Music (May 2021)

“Folklore loves nothing more than getting sent a submission that makes us sit up and pay attention, something from a new artist early in their journey is even more exciting and Philip Jonathan ticks both of these boxes with 'I, Hope'.” Folklore Radio (August 2021)

An incredible feat of music production, [Seafront] will surprise you from start to finish. From Philip’s delicate, perfect falsetto and impeccable guitar fingerpicking to grand crescendos.” NARC Magazine (May 2021)

“There’s nothing I could say here to prepare you for the energy and power of the guitar solo that rips into the middle of this lulling acoustic folk tune. The juxtaposition is as satisfying as it is surprising. This is a gem.” Ear to the Ground (May 2021)
